When you add a variable to your connection request or follow-up message, you might notice a "Fallback phrase" included. It looks like this: {first_name:Fallback phrase}

What is a Fallback Phrase?

A fallback phrase is a default value that will be used if the variable does not have a value. For example, if the variable {first_name:Fallback phrase} doesn't have a first name from your CSV file or LinkedIn URL, the message will use the fallback phrase instead

You can change the fallback phrase to any value you want. For example, you can change {first_name:Fallback phrase} to {first_name:there}. If there's no first name available, the message will use "there" in the message

Important Tips

  • If you don’t change the fallback phrase, it will be highlighted in red, showing that it can be customized. See the screenshot:

Example

Let's say you add the variable {first_name:Fallback phrase} and change the fallback phrase to "friend". Your variable will now look like this: {first_name:friend}. In your message preview, if there's no first name available, the message will use "friend" instead.

If there's the first name of the contact, you will see it in a preview of the message:
